Untamed Cat Food Review

Untamed Review - Introduction
Untamed got in touch with us at PetPoints to see if we wanted to test their cat food. I've heard of the brand and knew a little bit about them but have never actually tried the food for Woody my cat.
Though they have sponsored this article, I signed up and paid for the cat food trial myself as I wanted to ensure I was a genuine customer and be able to give my honest feedback.
I hope you appreciate this review and it helps you choose from the many different cat food brand options available and decide if Untamed is suitable for your cat.
Online ordering via the Untamed website
The Untamed website itself is really simple to use and clearly highlights the £7 trial deal for new customers like me. So just click on the offer and answer a few questions about your cat before picking the amount of food per day you want to order.
I just went for the middle option of two tins per day. Next, you have to exclude any food types that your cat doesn't like.
Ordering the right food is crucial not just due to taste preferences but also if your cat has special dietary requirements or has a medical condition requiring special food. A good resource to check on health matters when considering food is the RSPCA guide on what best to feed your cat.
Our cat Woody doesn't have health conditions but is not crazy about eating red meat, so we put an 'X' against the pork and beef recipe options. Then you just pop in your email address and they send you a recommended meal plan for you to consider.
Post sign-up, we went for the recommend 12 meals for the price of £7. What I particularly like is that they didn't then charge you extra for delivery - it's all included. They also give you a free tote bag and a reminder that you can skip, pause or cancel anytime. In total, I'm saving £11.60 on this exclusive trial offer. At the time of writing, Untamed were also running a promotion which gave me an extra special bonus tin (I wonder what flavour that will be!).
The sign-up process is totally painless and actually dare I say it, fun to do. Now time to check out and sit back to wait for the food to arrive. Woody is already getting excited. Please note, at the end of the order, you're also shown a one-off deal for their premium kibble at 40% discount. I didn't end up going for the deal, but it seemed like a good saving.
Receiving the Untamed trial cat food box
I received the trial box in under 48hrs of the order in a neat looking box. My first impressions were good as I totally forgot I was going to get a free Untamed Tote bag, so it was a nice surprise when I saw it there - very handy. You can never have enough tote bags!
I checked each of the cat food tins and they were exactly as ordered with a mystery bonus tin being 'Chicken Breast with Smoked Tuna'.
I started off my cat Woody with the 'Wild Tuna' Jelly. He tends to like any fishy food, but I thought I'd start with his favourite of tuna just to play it safe. Cats can be so fussy sometimes when offered new food to try.
Unpacking the Untamed cat food box
It was pleasing that on opening the tine I instantly caught a good whiff of really fresh smelling Tuna. I'm personally a fan of tuna so I resisted the temptation to put some in a sandwich to try myself!
At this point, I thought to check the booklet which states that Untamed use human grade ingredients so it kind of makes sense.
The tuna was quite soft in texture due to the jelly content, so it easily scooped into his bowl. It wasn't that kind of congealed jelly you see in other cat food. There was more liquid with the tuna due to the fish broth, which makes it easier for cats to digest the food and provides hydration.
On reading the label, the tuna content is 60% which is actually quite high and probably richer than my cat is used to so maybe he'll get full up quicker on this food.
Reviewing the cat food
Woody was interested as soon as I put the food down which was promising and after a few extra sniffs he began eating her very first Untamed meal.
This gave me the confidence to continue with the Untamed cat food trial, sticking with the fishy flavours first and then moving on to chicken based ones.
I followed the enclosed feeding guide by starting off using a quarter of the Untamed food mixed with three quarters of his existing meal and then increased it to half and half portions (new and old) after three days and then completely switch over on day six.
Summary and thoughts
Overall trying Untamed for the first time was not stressful or worrying in the slightest. My initial apprehension around switching his food over the span of a week faded away after three days as he reacted really positively to the new food.
Just make sure you take your time when selecting the food options on the Untamed website to begin with. This is especially the case if your cat has any special dietary requirements. Get in touch with Untamed if you're unsure as they are very knowledgeable and helpful in this regard.
Untamed have a really wide range of flavours, but nervous me still played it safe and only chose meals that my cat would definitely love based on his previous eating history. The bonus can is a good idea as Woody also ate this without issues, so it proves that you don't always have to order the same food all the time. It feels nice to give my cat a bit of variety outside of his usual diet.
Final recommendations
On the next order, I'll be a bit more adventurous and it will be fun to order flavours that I wouldn't have thought of giving him before trying Untamed.
I also feel good that I know the food I'm giving him is human grade. It was comforting to see a short list of recognisable ingredients that I would happily eat too. It worked like a treat for Woody, so maybe it will be good for your cat too!
On the downside, I did think the tins were a bit small and fiddly. However when I check the tin measured at 6.5cm diameter by 3cm deep which means they are a similar size to other brands. Small portions do mean the food keeps fresher as it's recommended to only store in the fridge for a maximum of two days.
Also, a menu planner that you could pin on the fridge would have been handy just to keep track whilst you're gradually switching over to Untamed.
I think the initial £7 cat food trial option is a great way to test the food without committing long term with the right to cancel. As they say the customer (i.e. the cat) is always right!
